FIELD: laser labeling of items by applying alphanumeric or graphical information. SUBSTANCE: label is made of multilayer material possessing properties ensuring that when pattern is formed by selective action of varying-energy-density laser beam brought to layer being modified, this laser beam modifies application layers in turn to shape visible pattern. Application layers can be modified by layer-by-layer ablation, layer-by-layer cutting, and thermochemical transformation processes. Pattern can be formed in different application layers as entity or each layer can bear different pattern, and engraving can be made on glass. Another difference is that elements of pattern obtained by laser action on label at one or other energy density of laser beam brought to layer being modified form independent patterns bearing different information and other than that of jointly formed pattern. In addition, when use is made of glass or other laser-beam absorbing container bearing label composed of paper or plastic substrate with layer of contrasting-color dye applied to its surface, laser beam functions in labeling to remove dye layer by laser ablation, to cut substrate all way through, and to engrave item surface. As an alternative, dye on substrate is removed selectively and item label is engraved or heat-sensing layer is exposed to laser beam through high-melting layer thereby forming concealed pattern.
