FIELD: digital image processing. SUBSTANCE: method involves detection of type of source brightness histogram and threshold brightness level, which provides possibility to separate two-mode histogram into two single-mode parts, and reverse transition from histogram parts to image segments. Goal of invention is achieved by approximation of stepwise source brightness histogram by function based on approximation polynomial, constructing function of histogram center dynamics, detection of brightness intervals of given brightness values, calculation of weight of separation region of each interval, identification of brightness interval for separation region with maximal weight. When maximal weight of separation region is greater than threshold weight, method involves treatment of source brightness histogram as two-mode type, and searching global minimum of approximating polynomial over brightness interval with maximal weight of separation region, which is treated as threshold brightness level for operation of threshold clipping of source image of control binary mask which is subjected to noise reduction upon reverse converting from histogram parts to image segments.
