FIELD: nuclear power engineering and other industries using process channels, wells, and pipelines. SUBSTANCE: method involves conveying probe along channel while scanning desired variables at reference points through channel height; maximal permissible speed of probe motion from moment it begins its downward movement by gravity is determined by recording and controlling torque and speed of motor shaft; speed determined in the process is maintained in the course of upward movement of probe; probe is displaced upwards and downwards over same generating lines of process channel. Device implementing this method has case that mounts drive, diagnosing probe, communication line, and measuring unit; drive is provided with automatic unit for recording and controlling torque on motor shaft and digital rotor-position detector; communication line is, essentially, all-metal bellows accommodating electric communication circuit; power cable is attached outside; one of its ends is secured on probe shank and other one, on drum; the latter is mounted on additional platform made for displacing relative to case in parallel to drum axis at bellows winding pitch; measuring unit is coupled with digital rotor-position detector through synchronizing line.
