FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to synthesis of chloromethyl group-containing organochloride compounds or their ammonium salts of the general formula: H(C6H4CH2)nCl where n = 2-4 that are used extensively as surface-active substances. Process involves the condensation of benzyl chloride at increased temperature. Condensation is carried out in the presence of zinc chloride aqueous solution, hydrogen chloride or hydrochloric acid at simultaneous bubbling with inert gas at the preferable rate 1 m3/h/1 t of reacting substances. Components are taken in the mass ratio = = 1:(0.02-0.05):(0.01-0.025):(0.0001-0.001).
