FIELD: preparation of medicinal and flavoring agents, and means for protection of plants. SUBSTANCE: benzyl chloride is prepared by hydrochlorination of dibenzyl ether with hydrochloric acid at 90-97 C in the presence of catalyst. Said catalyst is zinc chloride at dibenzyl ether to zinc chloride molar ratio of 1: 1-0.75. Process is carried out when gaseous hydrogen chloride is passed through reaction mixture. Use of readily available and cheap catalyst makes it possible to cut down duration of reaction and to increase by 5-7% yield of the final product. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 2 cl, 5 ex, 1 tbl
