FIELD: ecology. SUBSTANCE: method consists in removal of surface layer containing floating contaminants, such as petroleum product by placing the accumulating compartment in surrounding water. This compartment has overflow lip at the top; compartment is filled with water. Overflow lip held in water drain position relative to surface of surrounding water and water is discharged from accumulating compartment so that it should be refilled with water flowing over overflow lip together with surface layer. Device for realization of this method includes collecting reservoir which is immersed in surrounding water. Provision is made for reversible pump for discharge of water from compartment.
