FIELD: testing of special fluids. SUBSTANCE: method relates to field of testing of special fluids, particularly, assessment of protective properties of antifreezes and is used in chemical and other industries in preservation and storage of mechanical articles having cooling fluid system. Method provides for increasing the accuracy of determination of protective ability of materials with viscosity below 500 cSt due to provision of conditions for appearance of protective film of inhibitors on metal specimen. Degreased metal specimen in the form of plate is kept in antifreeze at room temperature for at least 24 h, and then in air. Lower part of plate not more than 0.1 of its height is treated with filter medium and plate is kept in chamber with air medium at temperature of 40 ± 2 C and humidity of 95-100%, and cooled down to room temperature. Protective properties of antifreeze are assessed by loss of specimen weight relative to its area. EFFECT: higher accuracy of assessment. 3 tbl
