FIELD: processes for hardening surfaces of rails, wheels, buffer plates and other parts and units operating in conditions of elastoplastic deformations. SUBSTANCE: method for hardening surfaces of above mentioned parts sustaining contact pressure values up to 5000 kGf/square cm comprises steps of applying additional local heat to zone of groove bottom by means of welding arc; positioning arc between branches of inductor in such a way that it is spaced by distance 15-25 mm from end edge inside loop of inductor; placing inductor along groove with gap 2-3 mm relative to part; simultaneously fusing groove by means of two heat sources by depth more than 4 mm; using fusion material with linear expansion factor more than that of base metal. EFFECT: enhanced quality of fusion due to reduced difference of linear expansion factors of base and fused metals. 4 dwg, 1 tbl, 1 ex
