FIELD: computer engineering, in particular, plug-and-play adapters for automatic configuration of input-output devices. SUBSTANCE: device has non-volatile memory unit, which stores information about system configuration even after power switch-off. If system is tuned to another configuration, information about new configuration is stored not only in preliminary given region of said non-volatile memory unit, but also in second power-independent memory unit, for example, disk storage drive, which is different from said non-volatile memory unit, or different region of said non-volatile memory unit. If alterations in system configuration are detected, for example, by means of self-test utility, when system power is switched on, then method involves testing presence of information which matches information about current system configuration in said second non-volatile memory unit or in non-volatile memory unit, which differs from said region of said non-volatile memory unit. In case, if match is detected, corresponding information is sent to preliminary given region of said non-volatile memory unit.
