FIELD: polymer production. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of polybutene with molecular weight 350-500 from isobutylene or mixture of isobutylene with n-butenes for use as motor oil intermediate. Polymerization involves complex of aluminum chloride compounds with unsaturated hydrocarbon dimers or trimers as catalyst and is distinguished by that mixture of isobutylaluminum dichloride and diisobutylaluminum chloride is used as said aluminum chloride compound and dimers and trimers of butadiene or butadiene with isobutylene are used as said unsaturated hydrocarbon dimers or trimers, weight ratio of the two indicated components in catalytic complex being (0.5-1): 1. Process is carried out in toluene solution. EFFECT: reduced freezing temperature and kinematic viscosity of polymer. Dwg 3, tbl 3
