FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described is new catalyst for polymerization of olefins, comprising transition metal M compound selected from Ti, Zr and Hf and which contains at least one M-π-bond, and magnesium halide. Catalyst component has specific surface (by BET method) of higher of about 0.15 cu.cm/g and porosity (by mercury method) higher than 0.3 cu.cm/g provided that when specific surface is lower than 150 sq.m/g, porosity (by mercury method) is lower than about 1.5 cu.cm/g.
