FIELD: communication systems. SUBSTANCE: method involves shaping of digital electric signal at bit rate N in transmitter, its conversion into optical signal, amplification, and transmission over one conductor of fiber-optic line. Receiver amplifies arriving signal and conveys it to optical demultiplexer where it is converted into electric signal. Digital electric signal is divided in transmitter into clusters of equal K-bit digital-data capacity, and sequence of optical pulses of length T = K/N, wavelength λi corresponding to i cluster, where i = 1,2...n, n = 2k, is transmitted over one conductor of fiber-optic line. Levels of signals arriving at receiver on each wavelength λi are compared, signal of maximal i level within time T is chosen out of them, and i cluster is converted into K-bit capacity. EFFECT: reduced requirements to fiber-optic communication line using this method. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
