FIELD: signal reception and transmission in cellular communication system. SUBSTANCE: directivity pattern of antenna adaptively responds to channel propagation characteristics among communication stations in communication system. Antenna directivity pattern is adaptively selected in accordance with propagation characteristics. High-gain directivity pattern of antenna is chosen when propagation characteristics point to availability of channel possessing only negligible signal components of multibeam propagation and lower directive gain is selected when considerable signal components are indicated by propagation characteristic.
