FIELD: organic chemistry and chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention describes formoselective catalyst involving synthetic porous crystalline material of the structure ZSM-5 and the composition including molar ratio: X2O3 : (n)YO2 where X is trivalent element, for example, aluminium, boron, iron and/or gallium but aluminium is preferable; Y is tetravalent element, for example, silicon or germanium but silicon is preferable; n is above 12. The greatest size of crystals is by 20% less then the ratio value YO2/X2O3, not less YO2/X2O3 in crystal mass. Catalyst has diffusion-modifying surface coating made of refractory material. Invention describes also method of conversion of aromatic compounds. Catalyst can be used for different selective processes of hydrocarbons conversion, in part, for selective disproportionation of toluene to para-xylene. EFFECT: enhanced effectiveness and selectivity of catalyst. 18 cl, 5 tbl
