FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: process includes interaction of toluene with methanol in presence of catalyst containing porous crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite characterized by 2,2-dimethylbutane diffusion parameter ca. 0.1 to 15 s-1 measured at 120 C and 2,2-dimethylbutane-provided pressure (8 kPa). Porous crystalline material represents preferably zeolite, in particular ZSM-5, which is subjected to steam treatment under severe conditions (temperature at least 1000 C). Aluminosilicate zeolite catalyst is preferably combined with at least one oxide modifier advantageously containing phosphorus in order to control decrease of micropore volume during the steam treatment operation. EFFECT: increased yield pf product and simplified technology. 17 cl, 3 dwg, 10 tbl, 21 ex
