FIELD: analytical methods in environmental monitoring. SUBSTANCE: water sample at specified temperature (25+/-0.5 C) is placed in the cell of IR analyzer and transmission coefficient is repetitively measured with 1 s interval over 1-min period. From results obtained, one calculates dispersion value. Total one-min dispersion and also particular features of its time-depending changes within specific time intervals reflect composition and summary effect of various substances present in water in lowest concentrations on physico- chemical properties of water. Such technique allows identification of water samples with different purity and pollution levels. EFFECT: accelerated analytic procedure and increased its information value. 1 tbl
