FIELD: cutting metals and electrically conductive materials, possibly investigations for determining their workability, selection of cutting modes and designing cutting tools. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of insulating body of electrically conductive cutting tool or blank relative to machine tool housing, connecting tool or blank with closed electrical circuit and registering electromotive force occurred at cutting process on contact surfaces of tool; using built-up cutting tool with changeable cutting multiphase electrically conductive tip covered with wear resistant dielectric coating. Electromotive force is registered when one apex of cutting tip is placed in body of cutting tool in such a way that dielectric coating is on main and additional rear surfaces, when second apex is placed - dielectric coating is on front and additional rear surfaces, when third apex is placed - dielectric coating is on front and main rear surfaces and when forth apex is placed - all contact surfaces are free from dielectric coating.
