FIELD: chemical industry, more particularly preparation of 3-phenyl-4-aminobutyric acid used in synthesis of medicinals. SUBSTANCE: method comprises condensing maleic acid ester with hydrobenzamide in the presence of sodium ethylate, subsequently hydrolyzing the resulting phenylglutaric acid derivative to recover phenylglutaric acid, converting the latter into phenylglutaric acid monoamide by treatment with acetic anhydride at 110-140 C and aqueous ammonia, subsequently treating the resulting phenylglutaric acid monoamide with hydrohalides and recovering the desired product in free form or as 3-phenyl-4-aminobutyric acid wit HCl. Describes is safe method of preparing 3- phenyl-4-aminobutyric acid or 3-phenyl-4-amino butyric acid chlorohydrate with high yield which is based on easily available raw materials and equipment intended for general chemical purposes.
