FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: invention provides process for hydroxyalkylation of aromatic carbocyclic ether described by general formula 1a: (1a), wherein n denotes number below or equal to 4, preferably 0, 1, or 2; radical R' is linear or branched alkyl containing 1-6, preferably 1-4, carbon atoms, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, s- butyl, tert-butyl, and phenyl; one or more R radicals are above defined alkyls; linear or branched alkenyl containing 2-6, preferably 2-4, carbon atoms, such as vinyl, allyl, cyclohexyl, and benzyl; linear or branched alkoxy radical containing 1-6, preferably 1-4, carbon atoms, such as methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, isopropoxy, and butoxy; C2-C6-acyl group; radicals of the following formulas: R1, in which R1 denotes valent bond or bivalent linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms, such as methylene, ethylene, propylene, isopropylene, and isopropylidene; radicals R1, identical or different, denote hydrogen atom or linear or branched C1-C6-alkyl; X halogen atom, preferably chlorine, bromine, or fluorine; R' and R jointly with two consecutive atoms of benzene cycle can form 5-7-membered cycle optionally containing another heteroatom. Hydroxyalkylation reaction is accomplished by interaction of above defined aromatic carbocyclic ether of formula 1a with formaldehyde or formaldehyde source in presence of effective catalytic amount of zeolite. EFFECT: simplified process. 26 cl, 3 tbl, 18 ex
