FIELD: mechanical engineering; designing of internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: proposed method of operation of internal combustion engine includes suction and initial compression of cycle portion of charge in pump-meter, bypassing of compressed charge from pump-meter into working cylinder through open intake member installed between working cylinder and pump-meter, final compression of charge in working cylinder, ignition of fuel in working cylinder, forcing out of combustion products from working cylinder into expansion cylinder through open bypass shutoff member installed between working and expansion cylinders. Useful work is executed when combustion products expand in expansion cylinder. Partial evacuation of waste gases from expansion cylinder is provided through open exhaust shutoff member of expansion cylinder. Compression volume of working charge is changed depending on value of cycle delivery of fuel by changing phase shift angle of working cylinder piston relative to expansion cylinder piston. Simultaneously the following moments are changed synchronously: beginning of closing of intake member, beginning of opening of bypass shutoff member and beginning of opening and closing of exhaust shutoff member. Compression of part of exhaust gases and mixing of gases with combustion products of working cylinder are carried out in expansion cylinder. Waste gases are enriched with oxygen by blowing air from air pump through expansion cylinder. EFFECT: possibility of in-service regulation of fuel-air mixture compression ratio, volumes of compression and expansion, exhaust pressure, excess air coefficient. 2 cl, 6 dwg
