FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, more particularly manufacture of magnesium aluminate useful for making ceramic products. SUBSTANCE: method of preparing magnesium aluminate comprises mixing of magnesium hydroxocarbonate or magnesium hydroxide with aluminum hydroxide and heat treatment in the presence of carbon monoxide CO at partial pressure of 0.01-0.2 atm at heating rate of 20-100 C/h. The resulting magnesium aluminate thus prepared is useful for making ceramic products by using method of vibromolding or pressing. Invention makes it possible to increase quality of final product due to making magnesium aluminate grains larger. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 3 ex
