FIELD: agriculture. SUBSTANCE: winding apparatus has twine feeding mechanism and driving device, which are arranged on guide above inlet slot leading into compression chamber. Drive and pressure rollers of feeding mechanism are mounted on spindles arranged in horizontal plane. Drive roller of feeding mechanism is kinematically connected to driven roller of driving device so as to periodically switch it through tie-rod of compacting mechanism. Winding twine carrier has two thread guides and provides for gripping and controlled motion of twine in two directions. Cutting mechanism has two cutter plates, with one plate being positioned for rotation from compression chamber unlocking mechanism. When material in compression chamber has required density, driven roller is actuated by compacting mechanism tie-rod to operate drive roller. Twine is passed through pulley between drive and pressure rollers and caught by roll. Carrier moves twine along roll width to cutting mechanism. Twine is led into space between plates of cutting mechanism and cut. Compression chamber is opened and roll is ejected. Apparatus may be used in machines for harvesting hay and bast fiber crops and provides for reliable winding of twine over the entire width of roll.
