FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy, more particularly preparation of pentaoxide from titanium hydroxytrichloride which is by-product resulting from sponge titanium production. SUBSTANCE: method comprises decomposing vanadium hydroxytrichloride with alkaline solution containing additives of sodium chloride and ammoniumcontaining inorganic compound to prepare ammonium metavadanate which is then separated from mother liquor, residue is washed, dried and calcined to prepare vanadium pentaoxide. Additive to alkaline solution is mixture of ammonium nitrate and sodium chloride at 1:1 ratio. Vanadium hydroxychloride decomposition stage is carried out for 0.5-1.8 hours, and after separation of residue alkaline reagent is added to mother liquor and directed to decomposition stage.
