FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: high-octane mixture(s) is (are) prepared by chemical reaction of isobutene and optionally other tertalkenes contained in hydrocarbon mixtures and ethanol in the presence of acid heterogeneous catalyst(s) at elevated temperature, and at least minimum of unreacted C4 hydrocarbons is separated by rectification. In carrying out chemical reaction in direct-current and/or steam and liquid reaction rectification zone(s), and total molar amount of initial ethanol is fed into process, which is at least by 5, or preferably by 10% exceeds its amount consumed in process, and high-octane mixture containing at least ethyl-tert- butyl ester and ethanol is withdrawn from bottom of rectification zone in molar ratio from 0.3: 1 to 22:1.
