FIELD: inorganic compounds technology. SUBSTANCE: concentrated sulfur dioxide is oxidized into sulfur trioxide according to cyclic flowsheet including sulfur dioxide oxidation stage performed in multi-bed contact apparatus, wherein initial al 50% sulfur dioxide is distributed together with oxygen stream between beds of contact material and then divided into separate contact gas streams (two streams from one contact bed). Sulfur trioxide is isolated from inter-bed contact gas and part of contact gas preliminarily freed from sulfur oxides is blown away from recycle. Stream, from which sulfur trioxide is not isolated, is mixed with distributed stream of initial sulfur dioxide and with distributed oxygen stream and combined stream is conveyed into the next oxidation stage. Sulfur trioxide is isolated from all streams after division of inter-bed contact stream and stream from the last contact stage in a single stage. Invention increases specific productivity of contact material, reduces temperature at the inlet of oxidation zone, while outlet temperature is higher. Reaction load on beds in apparatus is leveled.
