FIELD: production of fuel for nuclear reactors. SUBSTANCE: method involves serial formation of layers on cylindrical surface of pellets so that oxide-containing layers are alternating with zirconium diboride layers. Coating is deposited from vapor phase during thermal decomposition of zirconium boron hydride. Oxygen is periodically supplied to produce oxide-containing layers. Layers of different composition are deposited by means of single apparatus and within single process by varying only one parameter, that is, concentration of oxygen in its mixture with zirconium boron hydride vapors. EFFECT: enhanced reliability of adhesion between pellet surface and coating; reduced unwanted capture of neutrons. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
