FIELD: textile industry. SUBSTANCE: method involves providing mechanical defibration of coarse linen fiber to linear density of 0.3-1.5 tex; performing reducing cooking in the presence of complexone based on sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or based on derivative of ethylidenediphosphonic acid at temperature of 100-115 C for 1.5-2 h; providing reducing cooking, washing and souring. Reducers are antraquinone acids, nitrogen-containing and sulfur-containing reducers used separately or in different combinations. Method is used to cottonize linen fiber for preparing it for spinning process. EFFECT: simplified method, provision for producing ecologically clean product and improved quality of cottonized fiber. 2 cl, 2 tbl
