FIELD: measurement of range with use of range finders employing radiant energy reflected from target. SUBSTANCE: method is based on cyclic radiation of electromagnetic energy in direction of target and on synchronous reception of radiation from it where level of radiated electromagnetic energy is determined, condition of completion of measurements is determined and cycle of range measurement is conducted. If conditions of completion of measurements is not realized, level of radiated electromagnetic energy changes and one or series of cycles of range measurement is repeated. Level of electromagnetic energy is measured by change of pumping power of laser in radiation channel of laser range finder. EFFECT: formation of automated method of range measurement permitting measurement of range to objects both with natural and spicular character of reflection of radiation of range finder to be conducted and preventing failure of range finder in process of such measurement. 5 cl, 1 dwg
