FIELD: polymerization catalysts. SUBSTANCE: catalyst contains chromium trioxide deposited on solid inorganic oxide-type support, in particular containing, wt % in catalyst: chromium trioxide 0.4-4.0, aluminum oxide 1.4- 9.0, zinc oxide (additionally) 0.7-3.5, and silicon dioxide - the rest. Catalyst is prepared by depositing mixture of nonahydrates of chromium(III) and aluminum nitrates and, additionally, zinc nitrate hexahydrate from their solution in organic solvent on silicon dioxide support followed by evaporation of solvent, drying of product, and thermooxidative activation thereof in dry oxygen-containing gas flow. According to invention, deposition of catalyst components onto support is performed from ethanol-acetone mixture 1: (2-7) v/v, thermooxidative activation is conducted in dry air flow at constant temperature within a range of 450-750 C, and temperature is raised from drying temperature to said constant temperature at rate 100-150 C/min.
