FIELD: hydraulic engineering; structures providing for water cleaning from canal debris, water-passing and water intake devices. SUBSTANCE: method involves initially shutting off canal or penstock by means of trash mechanism having at least two hinged sections placed one on top of other, which is free to turn on hinges in vertical plane. Upon accumulation of debris filled up mechanism is hoisted with aid of control rod through lower edge of bottom section to surface; then mechanism is cleaned and forced down by moving control rod down. Mechanism is moved in guide slots and its sections function as trash racks. During first hoisting stage debris are grasped and held in position due to folding of mechanism sections; during last hoisting stage debris are dumped due to mechanism turn relative to upper point of hoist simultaneously with complete opening of mechanism. After debris dumping while mechanism goes down under action of control rod lowered by gravity this mechanism is sequentially turned in reverse direction its sections are folded, lowered, mechanism is brought down, opened, and set in initial position. Trash mechanism is made for opening between sections through 180 deg. in lower working position and in upper trash dumping position, as well as for closing to 0 deg. during hoisting and lowering. Stop used to terminate mechanism hoisting and lowering are installed in lower and upper parts of guide slots. Center of gravity of trash mechanism is offset towards flow relative to its supporting points. Proposed method and device enable gathering bottom debris in amount exceeding holding capacity of trash mechanism, their hoisting to surface, and disposal without use of additional facilities.
