FIELD: banknote authenticating facilities. SUBSTANCE: control circuit computes value characterizing correlation level between read-out plurality of values and each of stored pluralities of values of banknotes under control. Control circuit also estimates highest level of correlation between all stored pluralities of values indicating type of banknote. Device and method provide for displaying type of banknote passed through device that has means for moving banknote by point-by-point read-out units with radiators isolated from each other by means of cross intervals; these radiators have reflection factor detector and detector of signal transfer through banknotes placed on opposite sides of banknote being passed. Control circuit responds to radiation reflected from each type of wave and transmitted through banknote to detector with the result that it generates reflection and transmission factors, respectively. Control, circuit is also capable of determining angle of misalignment of passing banknote. Device has data memories characterizing value pictures corresponding to transmission values and reflection factors for known types of banknotes in certain number of banknote positions used to determine tenor and authenticity of banknotes.
