FIELD: authenticating coins and other flat metal items. SUBSTANCE: device has coin channel with top and bottom side walls; coin moves along channel over bottom wall past at least one inductor-type metering circuit provided with coil S. Coil S may carry first current (l1) from first current or voltage supply 10 and second current (l2) from second current or voltage supply 21. Capacitor (C1) is connected between coil S and first current or voltage supply 19 so that coil S and capacitor (C1) form circuit with impedance (Z1).. Phase shift (Φ1) between first current (I1) and voltage in circuit with impedance (Z1) is used as criterion for accepting or declining the coin.
