FIELD: manufacture of optical fibers. SUBSTANCE: method involves setting heating temperature of annular heater to value below deposited pipe softening temperature; removing contaminants from deposited pipe while annular heater is moving at predetermined temperature; setting annular heater temperature to value at least equal to deposited pipe softening temperature while annular heater is movable at required temperature. Processes of shrinkage and joining of deposited pipe are performed by means of apparatus different from that used for forming deposited pipe on inner surface of blank pipe. Method and apparatus allow amount of OH penetrating from blank pipe into glass-like component of deposited pipe to be reduced.
