FIELD: controlling image size in television set. SUBSTANCE: method is characterized in that levels of left- and right-hand edges are quantized during active period of one horizontal sweep line of television signal being detected and that quantized level is detected and checked for how many times it becomes picture black during preset time period, whereupon size of picture displayed is assigned as image size whose width is half of or equal to normal image in case calculated value is higher than first preset one. Device implementing this method provides for automatic control of image size for television set with half-screen capable of displaying complete image signal by checking image signal being received.
