FIELD: composite materials. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to manufacturing friction materials from compacted carbon foam. Carbon- carbon composite is manufactured from foamed carbon plastic preform with open pores obtained from mesophase pitch, which is subjected to carbon compaction involving one of the processes CVD, HIP, PIC, VPI, injection of pitch, polymer or any of their combinations. Owing to use of foamed carbon plastic preform, in which carbon fiber microstructure prepared by means of only foaming operation (instead of laborious process of manufacturing material from carbon fiber) is simulated, a material with high constructional characteristics is created, whose cost is lower than cost of analogous fiber materials. Resulting complex composites exhibit structural, temperature and/or tribological properties and can be used as friction materials, heat-control materials, and constructional materials.
