FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: tar is treated in presence of surfactants in amounts 0.01 to 0.1 g/l at 90 to 150 C using bubbling air, nitrogen, or smoke fumes through layer of tar, after which resulting vapors of water and light tar components are condensed to give two products: (i) heavy tar with content of water no higher than 1.5%, which can be used as fuel oil or mazut-based fuel composition; and (ii) light oil with content of aromatic hydrocarbons 50-60%, which can be used as pyrolysis solvent or composite organic solvent.
