FIELD: petrochemical processes. SUBSTANCE: in ethylene production process involving pyrolysis of hydrocarbon feedstock, stepwise cooling and purification of pyrolysis gas consists in quenching thereof in quenchingevaporation apparatus followed by cooling and purification from tars and coke by means of direct contact with circulating quenching oil in oilquenching apparatuses, concentration of tars in circulating quenching oil being maintained at predetermined level owing to its purification in separator. Oil quenching stage is divided into two steps, and purification of circulating oil from tars and coke is performed by separated of polluted oil from gas-oil stream after the first-step oil quenching.
