FIELD: polymerization processes. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to preparation of water-soluble high-molecular cationic polyelectrolytes used in paper-and-pulp industry in papermaking, for acceleration of suspension precipitation and filtration processes when cleaning industrial recycle waters and household sewages. Poly-1,2-dimethyl-5-vinylpuridinium methyl sulfate with molecular weight (2.7-3.4) x 106 is prepared by polymerization of 1,2-dimethyl-5- vinylpuridinium methyl sulfate in aqueous medium in presence of tertbutylperoxypropan-2-ol as polymerization initiator and alpha-amino acid, in particular glycine, leucine, or methionine, in amounts from 2.5 to 30 mmol per 1 kg monomer.
