FIELD: powder metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: according to proposed method, metallic iron in form of fine-grain carbonyl iron is mixed with elementary phosphorus and is heated, and product, thus obtained, is ground into powder. According to invention, heating is carried out at temperature from 380 to 550o C. Phosphorus-containing iron powder, thus produced, contains carbon less than 1 mass %, phosphorus from 0.1 to 80 mass %, nitrogen less than 1 mass %, hydrogen less than 0.5 mass % with content of additional, other than oxygen admixtures in amount less than 0.1 mass % and mean diameter of particles less than 10 mcm.
