FIELD: applied nuclear physics, ore and oil and gas geology, geophysics, mining industry. SUBSTANCE: examined medium is irradiated with neutron flux. Gamma radiation of radioactive capture from nuclei of elements in characteristic region of spectrum and flux of thermal neutrons are simultaneously recorded at distance 10-20 cm from neutron source. Density of examined rocks is established and content of elements is calculated. Fluxes of thermal neutrons are additionally measured at second and third distances from neutron source equal correspondingly to 20-35 and 40-60 cm. Their ratio is employed to compute length of migration of thermal neutron with the aid of experimentally determined dependence. Two- dimensional nomogram is plotted by experimental data and is used to establish content of radiation-active element in examined medium. EFFECT: increased accuracy of method. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
