FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: method is distinguished by that acetonitrile is synthesized from acetic acid and ammonia in gas phase on gamma-alumina catalyst in tubular reactor at 340-380 C and ammonia-to-acetic acid molar ratio (6-1.5):1, said gamma-alumina catalyst being activated with 2-10% phosphoric acid and acetic acid being fed at velocity 0.386-0.787 mol/h. Reaction gases heated in external heat-exchanger are passed first through outside jacket of reactor with linear velocity 0.06-0.19 m/s and then come into contact with catalyst located in inside jacket. EFFECT: increased yield of product without pollution thereof and prolonged lifetime of catalyst. 1 dwg, 2 tbl, 30 ex
