FIELD: electrometallurgy; smelting ingots from high-reactivity metals and alloys such as titanium and its alloys. SUBSTANCE: consumable electrode built of intercoupled billets has current-conducting member made in the form of rod whose length equals that of consumable electrode and whose cross-sectional area is minimum of S value found from equation S = K x J, where J is arc current, A; K is factor including current density of current-conducting member; K = 0.01 sq. cm/A. Rod is made of wastes of rolled-product, pipe, and forging industries and is disposed inside electrode. Current-conducting member is produced within furnace in the course of welding electrode to cinder. In this way electrometallurgy wastes are recovered without labor consumption and used for producing electrodes of high mechanical strength. EFFECT: enhanced arc current in electrode smelting and reduced explosion hazard of smelting process. 3 cl, 2 dwg, 2 ex
