FIELD: special electrometallurgy, particularly, vacuum electric arc remelting of highly reactive metals and alloys; applicable in melting of ingots of the second remelting from titanium alloys. SUBSTANCE: before main period of melting of consumable electrode (ingot of the first remelting), optimal; value of arc gap is set within 10-60 mm and maintained within ± 5 mm up to end of melting process of electrode by simultaneous measurement of voltage across arc and raising of pressure in furnace, and their correction up to required values by varying the speed of electrode displacement downward. In this case, optimal value of arc gap is determined for each value of arc current intensity. EFFECT: higher yield of melted ingots due to reduced casting defects and excluded flowing of liquid metal to gap between mold wall and melted ingot. 2 cl, 1 dwg
