FIELD: cartography, mapping of spacious territories including sections with cartographic materials different by time differentiation and quality. SUBSTANCE: method includes aerial photography, work carried out in laboratory, renewal of out-of-date and formation of new digital maps with the use of aerial photography and available cartographic materials. Territory to be mapped is divided by convention by number and quality of available cartographic materials into sections of three categories. Sections of first category are sections open for aerial photography which out-of-date cartographic materials can be used as additional source for orientation and referencing of new aerial photographs to terrain in laboratory. These materials should correspond to requirements for starting materials for laying-out maps of specific scale which enable new digital maps to be generated without transformation of new raster base and deterioration of precision characteristics of starting materials. Sections of second category not closed for aerial photography, include considerably outdated cartographic materials not complying with precision requirements for generation of maps of specific scale. Instrumental method is utilized for sections of third category closed for aerial photography. After division of territory into sections according to their categories available cartographic materials of sections of each specified category are updated with the use of technologies optimal for cartographic datum present on them and degree of change of situation. Updated cartographic materials of sections of all categories are reduced to one specific system of coordinates. They are used to form single cartographic base of examined territory which is employed in geoinformation systems of various assignment and/or printed by graph plotter and/or by photographic plotter in the form of thematic maps of required scale. EFFECT: simplified and less expensive technology of updating of cartographic materials of vast territory, increased quality and precision of materials. 11 cl, 5 dwg
