FIELD: machine engineering. SUBSTANCE: method for making piston rings comprises steps of winding profiled steel belt to helix on profiling mandrel at simultaneously quenching it during winding process at temperature 900 - 1200 C; cutting helix by separate rings; removing from mandrel cut rings with their ends spaced one relative to another; assembling them to pack; clamping pack by means of two washers and tempering them at state scragged in axial direction at temperature no more than 600 C; simultaneously realizing thermal fixation of rings on plane and their further thermal stabilization at temperature no more than 350 C; assembling rings to pack at mutually shifting locks of rings; clamping ring pack from upwards by means of washer having mass in range 0.2 - 15 kg; realizing ring tempering by several stages; at first stage heating ring pack in temperature range 200 - 400 C and seasoning them during 20 - 60 min; at second stage heating ring pack until temperature 360 -600 C and seasoning during 20 - 60 min; realizing winding to helix in apparatus having spring-loaded braking mechanism and guide in the form of --shaped lever whose one end is in the form of fork forming slit for passing profiled steel belt and whose other end is in the form of trapezium-like stop.
