FIELD: gasoline production. SUBSTANCE: tert-alkenes of hydrocarbon mixture containing chiefly C5 hydrocarbons are brought into liquid- phase double-stage reaction with methanol in presence of acid cationite(s), methanol/tert-alkenes molar ratio in the first stage ranging from 0.7:1 to 1.1: 1, preferably from 0.8:1 to 1.0:1. At least most part of C5 hydrocarbons and methanol contained in the reaction mixture coming from the first stage is distilled off to give, as residue, product containing main amount of methyl tert-pentyl ether. Distilled stream is condensed and, in the second stage, methanol contained therein is brought into reaction with main part of tert-pentenes. Reaction mixture from the second stage is subjected, at least partially, is subjected to rectification to give rectification residue, which is high- octane mixture containing largely C5 hydrocarbons and methyl tert-pentyl ether. In the first stage, 55% of tert- alkenes coming with initial hydrocarbon mixture is converted. EFFECT: simplified process. 3 dwg, 2 tbl, 6 ex
