FIELD: measurement technology; location of leaks in underground pipe lines and estimation of their sizes. SUBSTANCE: SHF electromagnetic radiation is sent along pipe line at definite orientation and frequency varying with time; location of leak is determined by leakage of electromagnetic radiation from hole by direction finding method; electromagnetic radiation is received by means of receiver whose bandwidth is equal to transmitter frequency band; position and size of leak are determined by abrupt rise of electromagnetic signal; sounding signal is formed at linear modulation frequency as electromagnetic radiation and receiver is moved along pipe line for detection and selection of linear modulation frequency signal at leaky area; then, linear modulation frequency signal is detected by frequency and amplitude and horizontal sweep and frequency mark on oscillator indicator screen are formed by means of detected signals.
