FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; production of magnesium-reduced titanium by reduction of titanium tetrachloride followed by vacuum separation of titanium sponge. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes placing apparatus in furnace, heating retort-reactor, evacuation of air and sublimation of condensate to retort-reactor, cooling retort-reactor with water and air. Novelty of invention consists in simultaneous cooling of retort-reactor with water and air at maintenance of constant water temperature differential at inlet and outlet. Water is fed downward for motion over inner surface of jacket and air is fed upward in space between outer wall of retort-reactor and inner wall of jacket. Besides that, water is fed to inner wall of jacket in form of film; pressure of water fed to surface of jacket ranges from 0.6 to 1.5 atm. Inlet and outlet water temperature differential is maintained at 10 to 25 C. Device proposed for realization of this method includes retort-reactor with sunken cover fitted with central branch pipe with plug and heat shield, retort-condenser with cooling jacket and sprayer mounted on it and made in form of baffle-type injector. Sprayer is mounted at level of spherical bottom of retort-condenser; injector baffle is mounted at angle of 80-90 deg. relative to inlet hole of pipe. Lower portion of jacket is provided with ports at level of heat shield; baffle is made in form of bow.
