FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; production of spongy titanium by magnesium-thermal reduction of titanium tetrachloride and cleaning of it by vacuum thermal separation.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes fitting low-melting plug on central branch pipe, heating, forming vacuum in retort-reactor and retort-condenser, breaking of low-melting plug, sublimation and condensation of magnesium and magnesium chloride. Novelty of invention consists in availability of detachable unit with additional low-melting plug mounted on material branch pipe, forming vacuum and sublimation is effected through branch pipe at destruction of additional low-melting plug and then at temperature of 650°C and destruction of low-melting plug simultaneously and through central branch pipe. Melting point of additional low-melting plug exceeds 150°C. Device proposed for realization of this method includes retort-reactor closed with sunken cover with central branch pipe and low-melting plug and material branch pipe for mounting the titanium tetrachloride supply unit, heat shield, retort-condenser, cooler and vacuum line. It is additionally provided with detachable unit mounted on material branch pipe and made in form of support with bead and pipe union; height of bead exceeds height of pipe union; pipe union is fitted with additional low-melting plug.
EFFECT: increased productivity of process; reduced power requirements.
