FIELD: transport engineering. SUBSTANCE: proposed vehicle engine unit 10 contains internal combustion engine 12, gearbox 18 transmitting driving force to vehicle driving wheels. Gearbox input shaft 20 can be mechanically coupled with output shaft 14 of internal combustion engine. Proposed engine unit includes also electric machine 32 which can be mechanically coupled through intermediate gearbox 34 with main gearbox 18 and can set for operation as starter electric motor for starting internal combustion engine 12 or as generator to supply vehicle circuit. Moreover, electric machine provides synchronization of gearbox at gear shifting by means of at least one electronic control clutch and flywheel mass 24. To provide reliable operation of electric machine as generator and provide sufficient amount of generated power, starting from idling and up to rated engine shaft speed, rotor speed of machine is changed at definite speed of engine shaft by changing steps in intermediate gearbox.
